Historic Bank Plaza Revitalization

Overview
Our team successfully transformed the central plaza and entrances of a historic bank building in downtown Buffalo, New York. This project was undertaken to address persistent water infiltration in the basement below the plaza, requiring a comprehensive restoration solution.
The scope of work included the demolition and removal of deteriorating brick pavers and concrete walkways, followed by the installation of a state-of-the-art hot-applied waterproof membrane system with new drains and plumbing. To enhance the aesthetics and durability of the space, we installed 9,500 square feet of decorative exposed aggregate concrete walkways and elegant granite pavers at the central plaza. Additionally, we meticulously reconstructed three grand granite staircases and replaced deteriorated limestone and granite wall veneer panels adjacent to the plaza and walkways, ensuring a seamless and revitalized appearance.
One of the key challenges was achieving proper elevation transitions between door thresholds, staircases, city sidewalks, and streets while working with large 2’ x 4’ granite pavers. Improperly pitched existing substrates had led to ponding issues, requiring expert regrading. The 70-foot-long grand staircase also presented complexities, as sloped city sidewalks created variations in stair riser heights from one end to the other. Our team skillfully resolved these issues, ensuring proper drainage, level transitions, and a safe, hazard-free walking surface.
After eight months of dedicated craftsmanship, the result is a stunning and durable grand plaza, enhanced walkways, restored staircases, and refreshed wall veneers, while also permanently addressing the longstanding water infiltration issues.
